To my patients, I promise: I will never roll my eyes at you or shrug my shoulders. Will never spend five minutes with you with my face staring at a computer screen. Will never listen to your problems and then say there’s nothing wrong and you need to just deal with it or see a psychiatrist. Will never value another doctor’s note about you more than what I hear from you. I promise I will listen, that I will believe you and respect you. I promise that when you suffer my heart is heavy and sometimes I cry and when you’re doing well my heart grows a size or two and sometimes I cry (and shout). I will not abandon you, shame you or betray your trust. I will look beyond symptoms to find out why and how you can be well, not just absent of disease. I will take risks for you. I will advocate for you. I promise.
